about

One Hour Minute (OHM) is a creative project that began in the summer of 2021. The original concept was simple: compose and fully produce one minute of music in exactly one hour of time, preferably using the first idea that comes to mind. Each hour of music making was filmed, with video sped up to one minute in length and added to that day’s track, and then posted on an Instagram page for the whole world to see. Rinse and repeat daily for four summer months.

Continuing in the summer of 2022, the process more or less commenced with little deviation from the previous year. Equal parts creative exercise and therapeutic practice, OHM has remained the perfect vehicle for testing various approaches to composing, generating ideas, and experimenting with various methods of recording and editing, all with a focus to remain in the moment and create spontaneously.

As with the first iteration of the project, this second year saw over 100 minutes of music composed over the summer months. Similar to the first year’s bounty, there were many styles and genres that were explored. And like the last time, numerous sound worlds, idioms, gestures, and motifs resurfaced again and again throughout the four-month span. Some pieces were “better” than others. Some sounded more complete than others. Some were probably best left on the computer, hidden from public consumption.

One Hour Minute, volume two is a 20-track “best of” compilation of minutes spanning the months of May through August in 2022. With much more of an emphasis on groove and metric music than the previous year, volume two seems to teeter between two distinct lanes or modes of musical thought: rhythm section/rock band writing on one hand and melodic, gestural guitar composition on the other. Titles were given to each work only after this compilation was put together, and reflect precisely what the music suggested after about 15 seconds of thought. Real serious business over here.
